Reaping the Benefits of Autonomous Cultivation - OPZuid EFRO

The cultivation of soft fruit is increasingly data-driven. Where the climate computer was once the primary source of information, today we see a multitude of sensors and applications providing growers with deeper insights for further production optimization.

To elevate this development, Growficient, Delphy, VDL, and YieldComputer joined forces last year. Together, we aim to make a significant contribution to the concept of autonomous cultivation. All four parties bring proven expertise in the agricultural sector:

  • Growficient as an irrigation monitoring specialist,
  • VDL with expertise in robotics, mechatronics, and manufacturing,
  • Delphy as a cultivation expert, and
  • YieldComputer as a builder of solutions for optimal prediction processes for both growers and cooperatives.

What We Are Developing Together

Within the project "Reaping the Benefits of Autonomous Cultivation," we are developing a solution that supports growers with their irrigation strategy, aiming for autonomous irrigation control. This is supported by substrate sensors, static cameras, field measurements, and a robot equipped with various sensors and a camera. Data is collected from different locations in the greenhouse. This data is transformed into new information using smart computer algorithms and computational models. This includes automatic fruit counting, harvest forecasts, plant balance, water uptake, and water requirements, leading to an adjusted irrigation strategy and more accurate harvest predictions.

Due to the highly innovative nature of this solution, the EU has decided to support the project through the OPZuid EFRO Program. As a consortium, we are proud of this recognition and are fully committed to making this project a success for the European agricultural sector.
